Movie: Waterworld (1995)
5) The Elders of the atoll attempt to sacrifice the Mariner (played by Kevin Costner) in the same ritualistic way as an elderly lady shown earlier in the movie - repeating the same speech as they lower him into the water, imprisoned inside a cage. There is mention of "in the presence of him who leads us" before switching to a watchman looking through a telescope aimed directly at the camera with his arms in a stiff triangle formation - representing the all-seeing eye. The earlier scene took place in front of a dying tree - perhaps representing the tree of life. The Smokers are described as "coming from the Sun"; The main villain known as the Deacon has flag-bearers beside him, albeit representing no particular nation. Christ on a cross happens to be at the centerpiece of their altar, reminiscent of sacrifice; in another scene they control slaves with physical strings attached to them, akin to puppets. The Mariner is described early on in the movie as "coming from the West", carrying a baby lime tree bearing good fruit. At this time there was also good seed (white dots) and an analogy to good sperm in the same scene - the Mariner being half-man and half-fish. The fruits then start to get picked off the tree. Helen mentions to the Mariner on-board the trimaran that she adopted Enola because she couldn't have a child of her own. When the Deacon is talking to Enola imprisoned aboard his hulk, he mentions he does not have enough space for all the people, and Enola says that babies are born only when there's room due to lack of food and water. The Deacon responds by saying that it's not quite like that because he represents the "Church of eternal growth"! The Deacon (of the Deans), described as a spiritual shepherd and dictator, is dressed like Napoleon and feeds all the slaves. He tells them a child will guide them, and that this is the holiest moment for sacrifice. The child (Enola) is seen against the framed portrait of what appears to be a Jesuit priest or Black Pope described as being anonymous, "death cannot find him", "no home or people to care for", "not afraid of anything", "can see and hear for miles", "can hide in the shadow of the sun", and "can be right behind you and you won't even know it till you are dead".
